Actinidia arguta is a very resistant extremely vigorous clockwise growing liana with quite big and extremely delicious fruit, which (and that depends on the variety) ripens from late August to late October. It originates in the basin of Amur in the Far East. There has been a significant progress in breeding new varieties for a few years. They were bred to produce big fruit and ripen early. The most important factor in the Actinidia cultivation is good wiring, thinning and regenerative pruning; it can be grown as almost any other vine. The most dangerous parts of its cultivation in our climate are late spring frosts that can damage buds, flowers and even new leaves. Actinidia genus is well known also for its excellent regeneration abilities and extremely vigorous growth (they can grow as much as 3-5 meters/year.
Arguta fruit is usually big oval grape with thin, smooth skin and full of tiny seeds that however do not feel unpleasant in the pulp. The fully ripe flesh is creamy, aromatic and really delicious. Ripe fruit can hang on the vines for a very long without any quality loss or change of pulp structure. Kiwis can be harvested as soon as they soften and they require lots of water and nutrients to be big and sweet. Insufficient irrigation causes the vines to produce small and dry fruit with bad pulp texture. Actinidia arguta grows the best in temperatures ranging 20-25°C.
